Beyond LinkedIn

In 1,169 days, I’ll retire from my job. I’ve already given notice.

At that point – assuming I follow through with my new wellness lifestyle – I’ll be mid-60s and ready to begin my next chapter.

Will I quit working altogether? Absolutely not – and I never plan to. Work is the privilege of giving value to the world. The secret is to find an enjoyable and rewarding way to do that.

Work is the privilege of giving value to the world. The secret is to find an enjoyable and rewarding way to do that.

The best thing about retiring from a “job” is removing the paycheck requirement, so your time is your own.

I mean, what would you do with your life if you didn’t need a paycheck?

This is when we really start to think about Purpose. And about Legacy – about what we’re actually about and what we leave behind.

I see people around me and am amazed by what they’re accomplished. Just like our high school year books, our obituaries will recap our lives, whether large or small.

Just this week, I ended up on LinkedIn and realized I don’t belong there. LinkedIn shows people who’ve accomplished something marketable; specialized in something.

LinkedIn members are known for something.

I realized this is what I’ve been seeking all my adult life: a specialized “persona.” When people think of Jane, they’ll think of this thing that I knew inside out, backward and forward.

Who am I? What do I bring to the world? Why do I matter?

Instead, my curious and multi-fascinated ADHD mind loves and chases it all. Every career move has ended in some sort of administrative support role, because using those admin tools is the only consistent “professional persona” I have.

Do I really want to be that on LinkedIn? “Hi, I’m Jane. I’m Support. I’m exceptionally skilled at doing whatever people ask me to do.”

Um, that’s not really what I’m looking for.

And so, although I certainly like my 9-5 day job, I’m excited to wake up April 7, 2029, 1,170 days from now.

I’ll be a free agent, not bound to the need for a paycheck. No longer selling my time for money. No longer asking for permission to vacation or to be sick or to work different hours.

What will life look like then? What will I give to the world?

Who will I be on LinkedIn?

xo Jane
